Mayes County was formed at Oklahoma statehood on November 16, 1907, from parts of the Cherokee Nation and a small area of the Creek Nation. It was named in honor of Samuel Houston Mayes, who served as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1895 to 1899. The county seat is Pryor Creek, named for Nathaniel Pryor, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who established a trading post in the area.
Pensacola Dam, located between Disney and Langley on State Highway 28 in Mayes County, was Oklahoma's first hydroelectric power plant when completed in 1940. The multiple-arch dam spans 4,284 feet across the Grand River and creates Grand Lake o' the Cherokees. It was constructed during the Great Depression with funding from the Public Works Administration and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
